There's something hanging in your closet right now that you've been saving.
Maybe the tags are still on. Maybe you tried it on once at Nordstrom, caught yourself in the three-way mirror, and felt that small fast pull of yes. Then you put it back on the hanger and reached for something less exposing.
That lesser choice is older than the closet.
It's a vow you made a long time ago, in a body that most probably needed protection.
"Stay small and you'll stay safe," you whispered to yourself.
"Don't take up too much space and nothing bad will happen," you promised.
The vow worked; it always does because it's how our brain miraculously keeps us alive. It creates rules out of small moments that become vows keeping you from the big ones. These vows protect you for decades. And they also cost you a life that's been waiting to be lived by the woman underneath.
Here's what your closet has been trying to tell you. That piece you keep saving for someday has been waiting for one thing, and it isn't a wedding. It's waiting for the full you. A regular weekday in your full self is worth more than some future event in a version of you that’s not fully expressed.
The alive woman is in your closet right now. Her outfit today might be hanging in the back. Do me a favor: peek in there, because I bet there's one piece there you keep meaning to wear. That's the one for today.
PUT ON the thing with the tags still on. Run your hand over the fabric first. Then wear it today, on this ordinary day, as the occasion it has always been.
