Okay, today we’re doing a little exercise together (it’s one of my favorites).
I’ve done versions of this with women in my workshops and coaching sessions, and it’s amazing what happens when you start asking yourself a slightly different question.
Ready?
Grab a piece of paper or open the notes app on your phone.
I want you to make three columns.
WANT. DO. FEEL.
In the first column, write down something you really, REALLY want.
And please don’t edit yourself here.
The beautiful house. The trip to Italy. The promotion. The business. The fabulous life where you’re drinking coffee on a terrace overlooking the ocean.
Whatever it is, write it down.
Now in the second column, write down everything you think you have to DO to get it.
Work harder. Save more money. Get organized. Lose weight. Build the business. Make a plan.
Also please don’t edit yourself here - no one is going to see this but you.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
In the third column, write down how you believe you’ll FEEL once you have that thing.
Maybe the house makes you feel secure.
The promotion makes you feel important.
The vacation makes you feel FREE.
Got it?
Okay, now we’re going to do something a little wild.
We’re going to take that feeling at the END and move it all the way to the BEGINNING.
Instead of asking, “What do I have to do to get the life that makes me feel free?”
Ask yourself, “What can I do TODAY to feel free?”
Ohhhhh. Isn’t that a different question?
Maybe you go for a walk. Maybe you take an hour to do something you absolutely love. Maybe you stop waiting for permission to enjoy the life you already have.
And can I add one more thing to that list?
Maybe you get dressed for it. Seriously!
If you want to feel extraordinary, why are you saving all your extraordinary clothes for another day?
Your closet is one of the easiest places to practice being the woman who already feels the way you want to feel.
You don’t have to wait for the dream to arrive before you experience a little bit of it.
You can start this morning.
PUT ON Look at the word you wrote in your FEEL column.
Now open your closet and find one thing that helps you experience that feeling.
The fabulous earrings. The beautiful shirt. The lipstick you save for special occasions.
Just one thing.
Because sometimes the fastest way to change how you feel is to change how you show up.
And please tell me, what word ended up in your FEEL column? I would love to know.
