Somewhere in your closet right now, there are probably two pieces of clothing hanging just inches apart.
One you wear all the time, and one you absolutely love but almost never put on.
Maybe it’s your favorite old cardigan hanging next to that incredible dress you bought two years ago.
Or the black blazer you wear everywhere sitting right next to the fabulous colorful one you keep talking yourself out of.
Six inches apart.
But oh my gosh, think about the distance between them in your mind.
Because here’s what I’ve come to believe about our closets. They’re full of fabric, yes. But they’re also full of feelings.
There’s the woman you’ve gotten comfortable being, and then there’s the woman you imagine yourself becoming.
And sometimes they’re hanging right next to each other!
I think about how many mornings we walk into our closets, see something we love, and immediately start negotiating with ourselves.
Where would I wear that? Is it too much? Will people look at me? What if I look ridiculous?
And before we know it, we’ve reached for the same safe thing we wore yesterday.
Again and again.
So today I want to give you a little assignment.
Go find the piece you keep passing over.
Maybe it’s the dress you bought for an occasion that never happened. Maybe it’s the gorgeous blazer you were SO excited about when you bought it. Or maybe it’s something bold that feels like it belongs to a much more confident version of you.
Take it off the hanger.
Hold it up.
And pay attention to the very first thought that comes into your head.
Because I have a feeling there’s a story attached to that piece, and it might have absolutely nothing to do with the clothes.
What if the piece you’ve been avoiding is actually your superpower on a hanger?
I love thinking about it this way.
There are two women in that closet. The one who keeps opting out and the one who’s ready to opt in.
And both of them are you.
PUT ON Find the piece you’ve been skipping. Take it off the hanger, hold it against you, and notice what comes up.
Then hang it somewhere you can see it tomorrow.
You don’t even have to wear it yet. Today we’re just going to let it be seen.
Tell me, what’s the piece in your closet that’s been waiting the longest?
