In 1985, Donna Karan introduced her very first women's collection. And guess what she started with?
A bodysuit. She considered it a core piece. She believed in starting closest to your body and layering outward from there.
I love this. In my opinion, everything looks and lays better when you’ve got a good bodysuit snatching you in.
She said the idea came from a simple question: If you had one suitcase, what would you pack?
She called it Seven Easy Pieces. The idea was that with just seven great pieces, you could get dressed for practically anything.
Now here's the funny part.
People are STILL debating which seven pieces they were!
Most lists include the bodysuit, a wrap skirt, a jacket, pants, a cashmere sweater, and something fabulous for evening.
But Dawn Mello, who brought Donna Karan into Bergdorf Goodman, later joked that those seven pieces "turned out to be 70."
Ha! Isn't that the truth?
I love the idea that seven was never really the limit. It was just the beginning.
And now I'm curious.
If you could only pack seven pieces from your closet, what's the very first thing going in your suitcase?
