The second is a denim blazer I made myself, short-sleeved, one of a kind. When I put either one on, I stand differently. I feel powerful. Sharp. A little bit like nobody else in the room is wearing what I’m wearing, and I love that.

But powerful is just the surface. Go underneath it and what I really feel is like the most authentic version of me just showed up. Go under that and it opens into something limitless, like there’s nothing I can’t do. And at the very bottom, when I am honest about what that blazer actually gives me, it’s the feeling of being the authority in my own life instead of at the mercy of it.

So the value under my closet was deeper than power all along. It’s self-authority.

And my body knew it before I did. Look at what I reach for. Shoulders. Structure. A jacket built to make me square and unmissable and tall. That’s the physical shape of a woman who is in charge, and my body has been quietly building that posture out of clothing my whole life, long before I had a single word for why.

Now look at what I avoid, because that is where it gets even clearer.

Long dresses, most of them anyway. On paper I should love them, and half of them are hanging right there, beautiful and “flattering” and completely unworn. But when I put one on I feel soft and vulnerable and a little small. Something in me quietly protests, because a long dress asks me to forget the exact thing the blazer helps me remember. The long dress did nothing wrong. It’s simply arguing against my deepest value, and my body’s been refusing to lose that argument for decades.

That is why a gorgeous thing can hang in your closet, tags on, never worn. It was never unflattering. It was unfaithful. It asks you to be someone your soul isn’t willing to forget it isn’t.

Your closet has been keeping this secret about you the whole time.

PUT ON your version of the “blazer” today, the one piece that makes you stand taller the moment it lands on your shoulders. Then hold the nice thing you never wear, and notice which one is protecting a value and which one is asking you to let it go.

<picture></picture>

Subscribe now

Create the Illusion Of

Open a women’s magazine from just about any decade of the last fifty years and sooner or later you’ll hit the chart.

The Morning Dress

Open a women’s magazine from just about any decade of the last fifty years and sooner or later you’ll hit the chart. For girls.

Go back and look at the verbs. Minimize, balance, camouflage, conceal, draw attention away from. Every single one is an instruction in how to be less of something you already are.

I followed it for years. I got dressed inside a grammar of hiding and never once questioned where it came from, because it arrived as a fact, with diagrams.

You can still hear it today in one word.

Flattering.

Ask a woman whether something is flattering on her, then listen to what she’s actually asking. She wants to know if it makes her look smaller. Longer. Less wide. She didn’t feel good. Not sick, just dimmed. She talked about her life with the sound turned down, and she kept wrapping her long sweater a little tighter around herself.

So I asked her the question I ask every woman who has stopped feeling good.

What piece in your closet do you have too many of?

She didn’t even pause. “My cardigans, Melissa. I wear one every day.”

Then she heard her own answer and sat with it for a moment.

“I’m not wearing these to feel beautiful. I’m wearing them to hide.”

She wasn’t wrong. Those long cardigans were soft and drapey, easy and effortless. And they covered her body just enough.

Each one was a small daily agreement with the part of her that did not yet feel safe to be seen.

So before we left the table, I gave her a challenge. “Go home and pull every one of them off their hangers and see if you can live without them for a while.”

She accepted.

Fast forward six months. This friend met me for lunch again but this time she was hardly recognizable.

“What happened?!” I asked her with a smile.

She proceeded to share with me how getting rid of a rack of cardigans changed her life. She was wearing color, for starters. She made changes in her business. She even started therapy with her husband, which felt long overdue.

“The cardigans turned up in every area of my life: my style was just the start. It inspired me to re-evaluate everything from this lens.”

My friend and I both learned the skill of dimming at an early age. For her, it manifested itself as a rack of cardigans. This is the skill of reaching for the piece that lets you move through the day without quite being looked at.

Most of us taught ourselves to disappear so cleverly we never noticed. Normally there’s at least one clue in your closet.

If you want to know where to look, ask yourself the same question.

What piece in your closet do you have too many of?

PUT ON the piece that lets you be seen today, and notice the one you almost reached for instead. If you’ve seen Margot Robbie move through Barbie, or Christian Bale disappear into a role, you’ve seen his work. He’s one of the great movement coaches, a master of the Alexander Technique, and his whole life is built on a single idea. The truth doesn’t live in your head. It lives in your body, and you have to go back down into it to find it.

I did not know, that morning, what going back down into my body was going to look like.

He had us breathing first. Then he had us down on the theater floor, moving like animals. Lions. Peacocks. We were a whole kingdom of grown professionals crawling across the boards, for God’s sake, and I was both an elephant and a toucan for a while there.

Somewhere between the crawling and the breathing, my mind gave up managing how I looked and went quiet.

That’s when my body took over.

I stopped performing as an animal and started fully embodying myself. I let myself take the deep breaths Jean-Louis was asking us for. I could feel my age through my knees and the nerves in my throat wondering if everyone was laughing at me (even though they were in their own animal on their square of carpet).

But then, after a few minutes of this, the worry passed. I stopped performing. I let myself just be there. In my body. Fully.

Then Jean-Louis silenced the room. He let us take a moment to get still.

And inside that stillness, I heard a soft whisper.

This Substack is reader-supported. She was an impossible shape handed to a generation of us girls.

But I've gone back to that carpet a hundred times in my memory, and here's what was actually happening.

I didn't want her body. I wanted her calendar.

The interviews. The weddings. The trips. The California sun and somewhere to be. She was never my mirror. She was my rehearsal space.

And I wasn't rehearsing outfits.

Every single thing I put on that doll was a question. What if I were the woman who goes on interviews? What if I were the one somebody drives across town to pick up? What if my life had a plain old weekday in it worth dressing for?

I was trying on lives. The clothes were just how a seven-year-old ran the experiment.

Every girl did this. Maybe not with Barbie. Maybe with paper dolls, or a doll your aunt sewed for, or your own hands pulling three things out of the closet and holding them up in front of the mirror, trying to work out which one of you was going out today.

We were all rehearsing for our own lives before anybody gave us the word for it.

And then, at some point, for every single one of us, the rehearsal got interrupted.

Mine came at a dinner table, in a big Italian family, where the rule was to clean your plate and also stay small. Yesterday I told you about the peach dress I never wore. That's the house it hung in.

I'll leave it there. You have your own version and I'd bet money it's as specific as mine. A person, a year, a sentence you can still hear.

But you know what? Those interruptions, the ones where we learned that something about us needed managing before we walked out the door, didn't stop me from getting dressed. I got dressed every day for the next forty years.

It changed what I was dressing for.

I went from dressing for a life to dressing for cover. From rehearsal to defense. From who could I be? to what will they say? The little girl who dressed Barbie for her dreams learned to dress herself to disappear, and she was so good at it that nobody noticed, including her.

Today I still stand in my closet wondering why certain pieces won't let me hang them back up. There are piles marked for donation that I can't make myself carry out the door. Plenty of mornings I stay in my leggings instead of taking the five minutes to shower and put on a blouse.

And the good days live in that same closet. Same room, different morning.

I reach for color. I wear my favorite blazer on a walk. I let my power come out in my curvy jeans.

Here is what I understand now that I've done the work.

That bedroom floor was my empire.

A girl, alone, before anybody could see her, deciding who she was going to be that day. No audience. No verdict. Nobody grading it. Just her and a small pile of clothes and a question about what kind of life this was going to be.

That's the morning dress. That's why we're here, and I've invited you to it because you have your own version of that floor.

Rainey handed me the dolls and the patterns. Her mother Helen handed Rainey the appetite for a bigger life than the one she was given. I was practicing the inheritance at eleven and a half inches tall, years before I had the rooms or the words for any of it.

And the practice never actually left. It went quiet. It got buried under a dinner table and a size tag and forty years of somebody else's opinions.

It waited.

The dolls are bigger now. The dreams are clearer. And the wardrobe is finally yours.

TRY THIS ON: Today, get dressed the way you once dressed yourself or something you played with as a kid.
